Potted Pyroxenes: Chemical Analysis of White Slip Wares from Bronze Age Cyprus.

Helen Hatcher (Reading University)

White Slip wares are found extensively on Bronze Age sites of Cyprus, the Levant and the Egyptian delta; in fact, they are regarded almost as one of main indicators for the Late Bronze Age (between about 1550 and 1150 BC). Previous research suggests they are made from weathered gabbros of the Troodos in Cyprus; stylistic analysis distinguishes several classes of 'milk bowls' largely based on their painted decoration. Can chemical analysis help to locate the source(s) more precisely?
In this progress report I shall present analyses by ICP-AES on samples from the production site at Sanidha and from the nearby port of Hala Sultan Tekke, and discuss the results of clustering carried out on them.
