Black and white photograph of an ancient wooden model of a boat.

The Petrie Museum of Egyptian and Sudanese Archaeology invites you to join artist and educator Rosie Fuller to fold paper boats, decorate them with patterns inspired by pottery in the museum, and add sculpted bow and or stern with paper collage. Discuss theories around model boats and your own ideas about why they were made and take your paper boat home with you!

Model boats and related art are extremely important when it comes to understanding Predynastic Egypt, as they represent technology that has not survived in the archaeological record. Despite the important economic and symbolic role that boats are thought to have played in the Predynastic, no complete vessels have been found and archaeologists must instead rely on the art of the period to learn about their construction, size and function.

This workshop is part of UCL Museums & Cultural Programmes 2023-24 event series Architecting Futures from Past Traces, bringing together art, culture and research.
