Latest research funding opportunities from external funders aimed at addressing the COVID-19 pandemic and its impacts.

Calls with deadlines are listed first, followed by open calls with no fixed closing date.

UKRI

UK-US research: Ecology and evolution of infectious diseases 2021

Apply to research the transmission dynamics of infectious diseases. UKRI wish to encourage high quality, innovative research on the ecological, evolutionary, and social drivers that influence the transmission dynamics of infectious diseases. The central theme of submitted projects must be the quantitative or computational understanding of pathogen transmission dynamics. UKRI will fund 80% of the full economic cost of the UK component. Successful projects will be funded for up to five years.

Expression of interest: emergency route for time-critical COVID-19 research

Apply for funding to support short term time-sensitive collection of data or samples or rapid turn-around research or analysis to either:

  • inform urgent policy or national decision making
  • secure data for future research use.

This is a rarely awarded emergency route for exceptional circumstances.

Office for National Statistics (ONS) and Economic & Social Research Council (ESRC)

ONS Datasets available and ESRC funding

ONS now has eight de-identified datasets related to the Covid-19 pandemic available for accredited researchers to apply to use. These include:

  • Business Impact of Covid-19 Survey (BICS)
  • Census 2011 for England and Wales – Household structure for Covid-19 models
  • Covid-19 Wastewater data
  • NHS Test and Trace Data
  • Coronavirus and the social impacts on Great Britain (OPN Covid-19 module)
  • Death registration data for England and Wales – provisional monthly extracts
  • Covid-19 Infection Survey
  • Census 2011 and Death Registrations Linked dataset, England and Wales

For those who are interested in using these datasets for research in the public interest, there are a number of pathways for funding the work via the ESRC.

Novartis

Novartis COVID-19 response fund

The Novartis COVID-19 Response Fund will provide $20million in grants to support public health initiatives designed to help communities manage challenges posed by the pandemic. The company has established an accelerated global review process that will allow for quick approval and disbursement of individual grants of up to $1 million.

Y Combinator

Response to COVID-19

For start-ups, particularly those working on: tests/ diagnostics, treatments and vaccines, equipment for hospitals, ways to reduce transmissions, monitoring and data infrastructure. YC will fast-track for a handful of promising COVID-19 startups through their admissions process for the summer batch and immediately fund them so they can get started right away. They will participate in YC remotely and can immediately begin doing office hours with YC Partners and getting help from the YC community.
