Computer Science BSc and MEng STAT admissions test

Guidance about the STAT admissions test for Computer Science BSc and MEng applicants, applying in the 2024 UCAS cycle.

What admissions test will UCL be using?

  • UCL have introduced an admissions test, the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT), for Computer Science BSc/MEng applicants applying in the 2024 UCAS admissions cycle. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to sit the STAT to assist with the selection of applicants’ suitability for these heavily oversubscribed programmes. The STAT is run by the Australian Council for Education Research (ACER). The STAT is an online multiple-choice test of 80 critical and quantitative reasoning questions. The test will last 130 minutes.

Who will sit the STAT and how will UCL use the test to assess applicants?

  • UCL will email shortlisted Computer Science BSc/MEng applicants to invite them to register for the STAT from the end of February onwards. We will shortlist candidates based on the strength of their academic profile and Personal Statement, as assessed through their UCAS application.
  • The STAT results will enable the Admissions selectors to further differentiate between the many highly qualified candidates who apply for Computer Science at UCL. Please be aware that only applicants who been invited to sit the STAT and complete the test will be considered for an offer.

Is there a cost to sit the STAT?

  • The fee for the STAT is £124. The test fee will be waived for shortlisted applicants who are eligible for Access UCL. Shortlisted Access UCL applicants will be emailed an individual one-use code within their shortlisting email.

When and where will the STAT take place?

  • Applicants will be contacted from end of February to invite them to register and sit the test as per the below schedule:
    • Registrations open: mid-March
    • Registrations close: Wednesday 10 April 2024 (GMT 23:59)
    • Test Window: Tuesday 9 April to Monday 15 April 2024
  • The multiple-choice test will be administered online. applicants are encouraged to find a suitable location to sit the test where disruptions will be minimal. The results will be sent directly to UCL, applicants do not need to send us their results.

How can Computer Science applicants prepare for the test?

  • UCL will send sample questions to all shortlisted applicants once we have considered all the applications received by the UCAS equal consideration deadline. We do not recommend that students download practice materials directly from the STAT website, as there is a fee involved.

How will accessibility requirements and additional needs be accommodated?

  • Following registration, shortlisted applicants with queries about reasonable adjustments should follow the process outlined on the ACER website.

Will Computer Science applicants for 2025 entry onwards be required to sit the STAT?

  • We cannot yet confirm the requirements for applicants in future application cycles. Further information will be shared on our online prospectus pages when available.
