A Female Philoctetes: A Staged Reading

Tuesday 30 June 2015 18:00-20:00

Cruciform Building B304 - LT1

UCL Greek and Latin are proud to host a staged reading of Aquila Theatre's innovative A Female Philoctetes, an exploration of Sophocles' Philoctetes reimagined with the title role played as a female combat soldier. This groundbreaking production features a cast of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans.

A post reading discussion will follow, led by Dr Rosa Andújar (UCL) in conversation with actors, translator Dr Peter Meineck (NYU as well as UCL Greek & Latin alumnus), and director Desiree Sanchez.

The event is part of You|Stories, the innovative US national programme that uses arts and humanities to explore the ancient and modern narratives of war.  You|Stories is funded in part by the American National Endowment for the Humanities.

The Aquila Theatre Company's public programming has been staged for the US President and First Lady at the White House, for members of the Supreme Court, The American National Council on the Arts and at hundreds of public libraries, theaters, arts centers, schools and colleges throughout the United States and beyond. Aquila performs innovative classical drama in New York City and tours throughout the world.

The event is also sponsored by New York University London.

The UCL Department of Greek and Latin gratefully acknowledges the generous support of the A.G. Leventis Foundation.
