One year on – Campaign total reaches over £344 million

One year on from the launch of UCL’s ambitious philanthropy and engagement Campaign It’s All Academic, the Campaign total has reached over £344 million – over halfway towards its target of £600 million, one of the largest ever set by a UK or European university.
The Campaign is also well-advanced in its worldwide engagement and community building ambitions, clocking up a total of 73,000 volunteering hours towards the Campaign target of 250,000 – representing alumni, supporters and current students sharing expertise and experience with each other and UCL through mentoring, speaking, general advocacy and the running of alumni social and professional clubs across the globe.
Donors and volunteers represent over 100 countries, illustrating the global nature of both UCL and the Campaign. UCL Vice-Provost (Development) Lori Houlihan says:
“Global philanthropists want to work with the institutions with which they can make the biggest impact, and there is no better partner for making a difference than a world-leading, multi-disciplinary, disruptive-by-default university like UCL. This Campaign represents a genuine sea-change in UCL’s advancement activities. We are no longer a university with a fundraising office but a fundraising university, in which the value of philanthropy is deeply understood across the community. We are enormously proud to be working with a range of philanthropic partners to really make a transformative difference to lives and societies across the world.”
Executive Head of Alumni Relations James Davis adds: “UCL alumni are a huge, varied and very talented group of people, and I’m delighted that they have embraced the Campaign so enthusiastically. There are many ways of giving, and the gift of time is enormously valuable, particularly when we have such a well-connected and high-achieving community. From Beijing to Berlin, UCL alumni are supporting each other and the next generation of students, making our alumni community a really beneficial social and professional network to be part of.”
It’s All Academic was officially launched in September 2016, with launch events in London, New York, San Francisco, Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Paris and many other global cities. Aligned with UCL’s long-term strategy UCL 2034, it focuses on four main themes that reflect the unique culture and contribution of UCL – health, students, London and disruptive thinking.
Successes in the first year include significant donations to the new Student Centre, which will create 1,000 new flexible working and social spaces for students, and for scholarships to support neuroscience PhD students.
The first year has also seen major progress to raise funds for the creation of a leading new facility for neurodegeneration research and clinical care at UCL, which will house the hub of the UK’s national Dementia Research Institute.
UCL’s success in philanthropy has also been recognised with the presentation of a prestigious Leadership Award to President & Provost Professor Michael Arthur by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, recognising outstanding achievement in university leadership and active support of philanthropy. The same awards also awarded UCL Gold for its student and alumni focused Philanthropy Month initiative and Silver for the both visual identity of the It’s All Academic Campaign.
