Dr. Haklay is a senior lecturer in Geographical Information Science (GIScience) in the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering at UCL. Dr. Haklay specialises in inter-disciplinary research in the area of GIScience, which is a path that he follows since his undergraduate studies at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, where he combined a degree in computer science with a degree in human geography. Dr Haklay joined the department during 2001, while completing his PhD in the department of Geography and the Centre of Advanced Spatial Analysis at UCL, where he worked on variety of research projects since 1997.

Currently, Dr Haklay is running several inter-disciplinary projects and activities. Together with Dr L. Vaughan of the Bartlett School of Architecture, he is a co-investigator on an EPSRC funded project ‘Towards Succe18 April, 2008 working with external stakeholders through DTI KTP programme 1681, funded by DTI, ESRC and UnLtd, on a 3 years project to develop an evaluation programme of the activities of social entrepreneurs in the UK; and through DTI KTP programme 6240, funded by ESRC and Dr Foster Intelligence, on a 2 years project to develop geographical analysis of national health care statistics. Finally, through a HEIF3 funded project ‘‘Mapping Change for Sustainable Communities’’, he is collaborating with planners, charities and artists to develop an interactive map of planning activities in the Thames Gateway area. In addition, over the last 6 years, Dr Haklay has cosupervised PhD students in the departments of Geography, Earth Science (Benfield Hazard Research Centre) and Computer Science.

Based on his successful collaborative track record, in 2006 Dr Haklay has been appointed as the director of the Chorley Institute, an inter-disciplinary facility designed to provide access to geospatial technologies to the whole UCL community. Dr. Haklay has extensive knowledge and experience in collaborations with researchers from multiple disciplines such as computer science, engineering, social science and the arts and humanities.
