UCL Online Directory Structure

The UCL Online directory structure mirrors the information structure of the site. Each directory or sub-directory (with the exception of the CSS, JavaScript and images folders) contain an index and a content folder. The content folder contains a 'content include' and an 'meta inlcude'. The index file links to the content file and meta file via a server side include directive such as <!--#include virtual="content/content.htm" -->

UCL Directory Structure

An example of the directory set up is given above. There are two reasons why the method shown was used: Firstly it allows the sharing of content between different areas of the site. Thus if somebody wished to have a particular piece of content in their web page they can embed it into their index page via a server side include directive. The other reason why this set up was chosen, is that it allows the breadcrumb trail JavaScript to work. The script works by reading the directory structure (i.e. each folder name) and then placing it with links at the top of the webpage.
