THE REAL FRIENDS OF TERROR
A television programme by Prof. Ted Honderich
in the Don't Get Me Started series of
Eamon T. O'Connor, the award-winning producer and director
Channel Five
Tuesday 19 Sept 2006, 7.15 pm

The idea of these distinctive 40-minute documentaries is that each of them gives a platform to someone to put forward one side of a controversial disagreement, anyway to advance an unconventional proposition or argument. So the programmes are by by people who do get started, and carry on. Presumably some of them are right to do so.

The programme now scheduled for 19 September, 7.15 pm, tentatively titled 'The Real Friends of Terror', will be presented by Prof. Ted Honderich. It comes from his new book Humanity, Terrorism, Terrorist War: Palestine, 9/11, Iraq, 7/7.... (American title: Right and Wrong, and Palestine, 9/11, Iraq, 7/7....).

Appearing in the programme are:

Rt. Hon.Tony Benn, minister in several Labour governments
Lord Ian Gilmour, minister in several Conservative governments
Mr Reg Kees, father of a British soldier killed in Iraq
Baroness Helena Kennedy, barrister and human rights advocate
Dr. Ghada Karmi, academic and consultant to the Palestinian Authority
Dr. Brian Klug, Senior Research Fellow & philosophy tutor, St. Benet's Hall, Oxford Dr. Riz Mokal, Reader in Law at University College London
Prof. Steven Rose, Department of Biology, Open University
Baroness Jenny Tonge, past member of the Liberal Democrat shadow cabinet.

Scheduled for a week later, 26 September, is a programme that will be a kind of response to 'The Real Friends of Terror'. It will be given by the journalist Mr David Aaronovitch, now a columnist for The Times, and also produced and directed by Eamon O'Connor. For some journalism by Mr Aaronovitch, go to Labour's Unthinking Opposition.

Two other programmes in the series will be by Ann Widdicombe, M.P. on the subject of women and their bodies, and Selina Scott, former television presenter, on the subject of television today.

Programmes in the previous series included those by Michael Gove, MP, on safety laws, Rosie Boycott, newspaper editor, on false grief, and Michael Buerk, television newscaster, on the ascendancy of women. The latter programme was broadcast again on 22 August 2006 as a result of legal difficulties that arose with a second programme by Buerk, on animal rights.
