Discrete Element Model (DEM) of sea ice ensembles

The figure below shows a birds-eye view of floating sea ice flowing past a fixed structure in a constrained channel. The ice moves under external forcing from the bottom of the screen towards the top. The graphs on the right hand side show the cumulative energy dissipation (top) and the magnitude of the load on the central pillar (bottom). By running these simulations with a range of friction models, we can begin to understand how the choice of friction model affects the overall behaviour of ice-structure simulations.

The grey blocks are fixed or constrained to move at a constant speed, and the blue blocks are free-floating. To restart the simulation, refresh the page.
