Applying ice friction research to sliding sports

From 2009-2010 I worked on a series of winter sports projects with UK Sport, with a focus on design for the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver. Many of the important questions related to high speed friction on ice and snow, and a new tribometer was designed and built at UCL to allow us to conduct experiments under typical winter sports conditions. The success of this collaboration has led to a UCL Impact Studentship, and Peter Sammonds and I now jointly supervise Alexandra Seymour-Pierce, working towards a PhD in high speed ice friction at UCL.
