Lateralisation of brain structure and function is an evolutionary conserved mechanism to enable a more complex pattern in neuronal circuits, lateralised behaviours and cognitive functions. I’m interested in how brain asymmetries are established during embryonic development and to what extent these asymmetries are conserved within different species. To explore these questions, I study the development of zebrafish and chick epithalamus – a dorsal subdivision of the diencephalon that has substantial asymmetries in many vertebrate groups.
