Join
UCU
I would like to invite you to consider joining the UCU, as
have the majority of your colleagues.
All staff employed in academic or academic-related posts are
eligible to join UCU. This includes part-time
as well as full-time staff, clinical academics, teaching assistants
and teaching fellows, administrative, computer, library and other
academic-related staff, plus research
staff, irrespective of the source
of funding. As we hope you will see from this website, we actively
represent and defend the rights of all of our members. Scientific
staff on the payroll of the Medical Research Council are also eligible
to join.
You can join UCU online
(recommended for speed) or by printing and completing a traditional
paper form and posting it in.
UCU is both a professional association and a trade union, formed
in June 2006 by an amalgamation of the old Natfhe and AUT unions.
UCU is now the largest post-16 Education Union in the world.
Our role in higher education means that you can claim the subscription
as a necessary expense of your employment from the Inland Revenue.
In addition to trying to improve the university system as a whole,
UCU works for better pay and conditions for staff.
UCLUCU is one of the largest local associations in the country,
with 1500 members, a team of experienced local officers and an active
committee. Whilst salaries and pensions
are negotiated nationally, we are involved in the local implementation
of national agreements.
In addition, many aspects of your conditions of employment are
negotiated locally. For example, past meetings of UCLUCU and the
College have covered the employment of part-time teaching staff;
a career structure and promotions procedure for research staff;
plus disciplinary, grievance and redundancy procedures for academic
staff. We have negotiated improved maternity leave, a bridging fund
for research staff between contracts, and improvements to the staff
review and development scheme. UCLUCU is actively involved in health
and safety issues and the work of the College Committee on Equal
Opportunity.
We hold regular meetings, have a College-wide system of Departmental
Representatives, and produce a local newsletter, so there is
plenty of opportunity to keep in touch, put your view and become
involved.
One of the most valued functions of UCU is to give individual
members personal advice and assistance in relation to their employment.
UCLUCU can, if necessary, call upon the assistance of the full-time
London Regional Official and all the resources of UCU Headquarters,
including in the last resort legal advice and assistance. In these
difficult times most staff have found it well worthwhile having
the unique expertise which the UCU can offer in this area.
I sincerely hope that you will join UCU.
You can now join the union
online. When you do please also email: ucu@ucl.ac.uk so
that we can add you to our local email lists as soon as possible.
Yours sincerely,
Saladin Meckled-Garcia
Joint President, UCLUCU
