A study published in Brain, led by researchers
at UCL Institute of Neurology, has shown that genetic mutations which
cause a decrease in dopamine
production in the brain and lead to a form of childhood-onset Dystonia,
also play a role in the development of Parkinson’s disease.
Dr Whitworth gained a BSc at Imperial College London (1997) and then went on to earn a PhD (2001) in the Department of Genetics at the University of Cambridge, studying the genetic control of development in Drosophila. Following this, Dr Whitworth conducted his post-doctoral research at the University of Washington in Seattle, where we developed a new model to study Parkinson's disease. In July 2005 he was recruited to the University of Sheffield/MRC Centre for Developmental and Biomedical Genetics to start up his own research group which continues to focus on unravelling the mechanisms of neurodegeneration, in particular Parkinson's disease.
