Main Quad Temporary Pop-up
The Main Quad Temporary Pop-up is a 5-year facility to increase the provision of teaching and learning space on campus, covering the reduction due to current refurbishment works on campus.
Available for the 2017/2018 academic year, it will include two 100 and two 50-seat lecture rooms.
From the outset of the project, minimizing the impact of the temporary structure in the main quad, which is one of the most significant parts of the UCL Campus, has been a core element that has received considerable focus and work to achieve the best possible outcome.
Historic England suggested that the design of the building wrap should include heritage-related public benefits, perhaps with an interpretation of the architectural landscape. This idea was taken and developed further with the artists’ best to deliver large scale canvas work that would intrinsically take the form of a sculpture.
The design - of what became known as the, “Art Wrap” - created by Edward Allington & Jo Volley, draws on the neighbouring columns, the rich history of UCL (1826-1926) and uses colouring that is both at once sympathetic and an enhancement to the sensitive area in which it will stand. Controlled lighting will also be employed to subtly accentuate its properties.
- Works to the new Main Quad Teaching facility will begin in August 2017 and complete during the 2017/2018 Academic Year.
