Transforming UCL

Astor College

Project Overview

The refurbishment and extension of Astor College is part of UCL’s commitment to improving student experience, bringing its Halls of Residence up to a modern standard for the benefit of those attending university for the first time from September 2018.

Accommodation is being increased with space for 291 people with ensuite accommodation and fully accessible rooms for disabled students. The works includes a refurbishment and rear extension, with a remodeling of the floor plan to create new ‘cluster blocks’ to encourage communal living and help students to develop friendships in their first year. Within the bedrooms there will be a better use of space, an increase in floor to ceiling height, as well as larger windows. As a result rooms will feel more spacious and more daylight will flow in making accommodation more desirable for students.

The Halls will become more active for students and neighbours with recreational facilities on the ground floor, an integrated café opening out on to Charlotte Street and an improved public realm along Bedford Passage.

The development includes some of the latest sustainable technologies such as a ‘BluRoof’, to improve drainage and water retention, as well as a shared control heating plant with Sainsbury’s Wellcome Centre – reducing energy usage in both buildings.

  • Work to start on site in early October
  • Scheduled completion set for September 2018
