Dr Tuukka Toivonen
Honorary Senior Lecturer
Dr Tuukka Toivonen, PhD (Oxon.), is an expert on creativity in entrepreneurship, co-working and innovative teams. Born in Helsinki and educated in the UK as well as Japan, he is the director of Creative Friction, an emerging research agency that helps organisations foster interactions that can energise the creative journeys of their members.
Dr Toivonen's research is focused on understanding how moments of shared creativity and insight - whether spontaneous or facilitated by innovative technologies, environments or programmes - shape emerging ideas over time. Since 2015, Dr Toivonen and his teams have focused primarily on investigating collective creativity in the context of entrepreneurship and social innovation (at the individual and team levels). However, future research is set to examine more closely how human and machine creativity become intertwined, not only in entrepreneurship but also in policy-focused transdisciplinary projects. Dr Toivonen is in the process of assembling a broader team of forward-looking young scholars to build a new centre of research on creative processes in the digital age.
Prior to his appointment at UCL STEaPP, Dr Toivonen served as Senior Lecturer in Social & Economic Innovation at the UCL Institute for Global Prosperity. There, he co-designed and led the MSc in Global Prosperity, a bold new Master's programme for transition leaders who must work across disciplinary boundaries to advance social innovations consistent with sustainable visions of prosperity.
Before becoming affiliated with UCL, Dr Toivonen held several prestigious research and teaching positions at top global universities, including the University of Oxford, Kyoto University, Goldsmiths and SOAS University of London. Through these positions, Tuukka migrated from sociology and social policy towards the areas of management, social entrepreneurship and creativity studies in organisation science.
