Academic Services

Academic Services is responsible for policy and operations relating to institutional governance, academic organisation and governance, committee operations, quality management and enhancement strategy and processes, research governance, and senior academic staff appointments.

The office is also responsible for:

  • advising on the interpretation of UCL’s instruments of government, including the Charter and Statutes
  • acting as the secretariat for UCL’s formal committees
  • overseeing the academic governance framework, including maintenance of the UCL Academic Manual, the register of UCL’s collaborative agreements, and the procedures for programme and module approval
  • supporting the implementation of UCL’s research governance framework, including the investigation of allegations of research misconduct
  • external and internal quality management and enhancement policies and processes
  • providing a statistical service and other information derived from student data for internal and external purposes, and submitting statutory returns
  • appointments of Chairs and Readerships

  • Producing the examination timetable for and running the centrally-organised examinations
  • Processing results and awards
  • Producing degree certificates and transcripts
  • Overseeing the appointment of examiners for taught degree programmes
  • Being responsible for the procedure for dealing with examination irregularities

Academic Policy

The Academic Policy team manage the Academic Policy and Quality Assurance procedures across UCL. 

Key areas include:

  • Maintenance and development of UCL’s academic regulations
  • Development of UCL’s approach to quality review and enhancement, including the development of quality review policies, regulations and procedures such as:

    • Internal Quality Review (IQR);
    • Annual Student Experience Review;
    • Programme Approval;
    • Academic Partnerships;
    • External Examining arrangements.
  • Providing advice and support to students and staff across UCL on matters pertaining to the academic policy and regulations of UCL.

Student Data Services

Head: Gary Smith

Student Data Services co-ordinates the production, analysis and return of student related statutory returns and internal management information relating to the student body of UCL.

The key activities are:

  • providing student-related data for annual monitoring, internal quality review and external returns such as research council submissions and accreditation
  • maintaining structures and entities within Portico, such as department, programme, route and JACS coding
  • maintenance of data quality to allow the statutory returns to be produced effectively
  • co-ordinating UCL’s internal student load exercise to inform the allocation of resource and meet statutory requirements in these areas
