Scholarships, bursaries and prizes: what happened next?
Studying at the Slade offers students unique opportunities in the form or scholarships, bursaries, prizes in addition to the resources and facilities offered to all students at UCL. These alumni videos offer an insight into how this has impacted on former students' practice as working artists.
Through these films, we hope to show the importance of arts and humanities in enabling us to understand the world in which we live, the benefits of interdisciplinarity and the importance of forging strong partnerships within the UCL community and with the outside world.
Mataio Austin Dean
Mataio Austin Dean is an artist, poet, musician, and activist from Portsmouth. Born in 1996 to a Guyanese mother and an English father, his practice is often centred around an interrogation of Marxism as a tool for emancipatory praxis. His work is concerned with the relationship between printmaking and orality, with works often consisting of etchings and other printed matter, along with singing, writing, reciting, and speaking.
He completed his BA in Fine Art at the Slade School of Art in 2020. He received the Barto dos Santos Memorial Award and the Alfred W. Rich Prize. He was also awarded the UCL East Provost Prize, which comprised a commission to produce a new work for UCL East. For context, Mataio has clarified that he was able to complete commission work and continue his art practice supported by his eligibility for Universal Credit. He completed a Creative Fellowship at the Institute of Advanced Studies in 2021 and has also led workshops on UCL Widening Participation programmes.

Maud Craigie
Maud Craigie works with film, performance and installation. Her work combines staged and documentary techniques to explore the expansion of fictional narrative structures into everyday experience.
She studied at Camberwell College of Arts before completing her MA at the Slade in 2016. She was awarded the Boise Travel Scholarship in 2016.

Paolo Salvador
Paolo Salvador is a Peruvian-born, artist, currently based in Berlin. He creates mythological paintings that comment on themes related to home, displacement and belonging.
He studied for a BFA Painting at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, Lima and for an MFA in Painting at the Slade in 2019. He was awarded the Barto dos Santos Memorial Award, the William Coldstream Prize, and the Tom Espley Prize. He was also selected to participate in the Slade Summer Residency programme, which ran between 2014 - 2019.
