Faroese language and culture:

18 Islands, 18 Objects

In 2010-11, the Department will be offering an innovative course in Faroese language and culture.

The course will be taught by John Mitchinson, PhD candidate in the Department. The impetus to re-launch Faroese at UCL came from our first-year students. Development of the course is funded by a grant awarded by UCL's committee for innovations in learning and teaching, ESCILTA.

The weekly seminars will centre on a series of objects, images and recordings from the Faroes, sourced by John Mitchinson. Students will learn the language and culture of the islands through the prism of national identity, landscape and cultural practice. The course will culminate in an exhibition on Faroese culture at UCL curated by the students.
