Launch of new UCL IRDR Continuing Professional Development Courses in September 2016

The CPD course on Reducing disaster risk during reconstruction and retrofit: a research-based course for managers and the built environment professionals is a one-day course for organisations and individuals involved in international and domestic disaster reconstruction and retrofit (such as earthquakes, floods and landslides) and aims to assist them in devising and implementing disaster reconstruction and retrofitting programmes that will better withstand a subsequent disaster.

Course content overview:

  • The links between development, post disaster recovery and reconstruction and their relevance to disaster risk reduction (DRR)
  • Understanding the multidimensional nature of post disaster recovery and the role of reconstruction and stakeholder engagement towards reducing future disaster risks
  • How to integrate different tools for DRR into reconstruction and recovery projects and programmes

The CPD course on Business risk and resilience in the face of disasters: a research based workshop for leaders is a one-day course that will enable businesses and organisations to prepare themselves for a major disruptive incident, for example flood, earthquake, or terrorist attack, and show them how they can survive in the immediate aftermath of those incidents.

Course content overview:

  • The changing nature of disaster risk and its interconnected impacts on businesses
  • Practical meaning of business resilience and its position in disaster response
  • How to prepare businesses for emergencies and post disaster recovery, including continuity and emergency planning
