BARI-LIFESTYLE Observational Study: Investigating the impact of bariatric surgery on body fat, muscle and bone, physical activity level and quality of life in the first year after surgery

We are currently recruiting bariatric patients for a study that looks at physical and life changes after bariatric surgery. We want to gain knowledge on how weight loss after bariatric surgery affects the relative amounts of muscle mass and body fat, bone density, physical fitness, diseases linked to obesity (e.g. diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol level, sleep apnoea) and quality of life.

You are eligible to take part if:

  • You are between 18 - 65 years of age
  • You are scheduled to undergo either gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy surgery at University College London Hospitals (UCLH) or Whittington Hospital
  • You are willing to comply with the study protocol

This study will last for 12-16 months. Assessments will be undertaken once before surgery and then three times after surgery.
