9 June 2011

UCL wireless services are being streamlined to make them easier to use.

What's New?

For UCL staff and students on campus, an enhanced version of the existing eduroam wireless service will officially take over from RoamNet on the 14th September 2011. Wireless RoamNet will no longer be available after September. RoamNet users should migrate to eduroam as soon as possible (information on how is outlined below). A new easy to use UCLGuest service will also replace the current VisiNet wireless service on the 14th September 2011.

eduroam benefits

In addition to eduroam's current benefits of easy connection (no additional software is required), it is also compatible with smartphone, tablet and mobile devices.

Eduroam supports all popular mobile devices, including iPhone, iPad & Android devices.

The enhanced eduroam service will also offer access to:

  • Protected corporate services like FIS and MyView.
  • Other services currently accessible via RoamNet like departmental resources and eJournals.

UCLGuest benefits

The new easy to use UCLGuest service, which will replace the current VisiNet wireless service, has a number of benefits including:

  • Easy Guest Account creation.
  • Departments will be able to create their own temporary UCLGuest Accounts for visitors and conferences instantly.
  • Easy Guest connection.
  • Simple web based authentication from all wireless devices.

VisiNet will only continue as a service until the 14th September 2011.

Still on Wireless RoamNet?

Staff and students currently using Wireless RoamNet should migrate to eduroam as soon as possible and will need to do so before the 14th September 2011.

Please read the instructions on how to migrate. Wireless RoamNet will only continue as a service until the 14th September 2011.

If you are using Wireless RoamNet features that are not currently present in the eduroam service, please contact the Wireless team wireless-support@ucl.ac.uk  for help with your migration.

Wired RoamNet

Wired RoamNet will continue. This service will be migrated over to a wired eduroam service separately and we will work with departments to minimise disruption.

Wired RoamNet is in use where departments have requested the ability to connect their laptops to the UCL network through a cable rather than a wireless connection in specified locations.  Locations where the wired RoamNet service is available can be found at the URL http://www.ucl.ac.uk/isd/common/wireless/common/locations/wired-location...

Service Managers

If you have concerns about staff and students accessing services via wireless, please contact wireless-support@ucl.ac.uk for help restricting access.
