UCL students aiming to get climate change back on the agenda

1 December 2011

A group of UCL students, many studying Environmental Law and Policy, are aiming to increase awareness of the COP 17 environmental summit in Durban.

They feel that climate change is slipping off the political agenda and have produced a briefing note to outline the key issues likely to be raised at the COP summit and provide some background to the discussions.

One of the students involved, Eva Van Der Marel, explained: "It has been said that climate change is the biggest challenge mankind could ever hope to face. Both in theory and practice, combating climate change requires significant cooperation between all the people on this planet. With the considerable power that states have over the different actors on their territory (citizens, consumers and powerful economic actors) their role is of significant importance."

"It is the combination of these personal actions, and a secure national and international framework, that can make or break the future of mankind. That is why COP17 has to be a success."

"Cop 17 creates a huge opportunity for states to build such relationships of trust between one another, and to cooperate. It is the combination of these personal actions, and a secure national and international framework, that can make or break the future of mankind. That is why COP17 has to be a success."

The group is also carrying out a series of interviews with academics to get their views on the summit. They also plan to use social media such as Twitter to help raise the profile of their work and reach a wider audience.
