UCL Careers Service: more than city jobs

The UCL Careers Service held a two-day event on 18 and 19 March outside the Print Room Café, to provide UCL undergraduate and graduate students unfamiliar with its events and services with an opportunity to meet the staff.

The event included a free draw for twelve prizes designed to help students to break into some of the most competitive careers. They ranged from a meeting with a barrister from specialising in media law (won by a final-year student from UCL German) to a free place on a one-day course about careers in international development (won by a first-year UCL Economics student and an MSc student from the UCL School of Public Policy) and a day behind the scenes at the Victoria & Albert Museum with an assistant curator (won by a third-year student from UCL English Literature & Language).

Around two hundred students visited the stand. They were able to see a sample of the current jobs being advertised through the Careers Service, and to talk to Careers Service staff about the specific events and services which could help them plan their chosen career.

Phil Howe, Joint Acting Head of UCL Careers Service, said: "There are still many students who think we only help people become bankers, lawyers and accountants, when in fact our team have a wealth of contacts in a range of other really exciting sectors. I hope this event has helped to encourage a wider cross-section of students to engage with us."

The Careers Service has recently held a number of forums covering a range of
interesting sectors such as museum work, arts management, media,

The UCL Careers Service provides professional and impartial career management advice for the UCL community.
