Major new funding for UCL High Energy Physics

The UCL High Energy Physics Group has been awarded a substantial grant from the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council (PPARC).

The rolling grant, for £6.76 million, will last for the next five years, but is expected to be renewed in three years. The research council component of this amount is £5.76 million, with the rest coming from UCL and the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE). The number of postdoctoral positions funded by the grant has doubled from four to eight, with seven fully supported technical posts and awards for travel and equipment.

In awarding the grant, the peer review panel congratulated the group on its exciting physics programme. The award comes as recognition of the group's outstanding programme in collider and neutrino physics, in terms of both scientific leadership and expertise in the required technology.

Professor Jon Butterworth, head of the UCL High Energy Physics group, said: "This is a really exciting time for us, especially with the CERN Large Hadron Collider starting up next year. This funding will allow us to keep UCL at the forefront of research in fundamental particle physics for years to come."
