Centre for Neuromuscular Disease

The Centre for Neuromuscular Diseases aims to provide a local, regional and national centre of clinical excellence for the diagnosis and management of Neuromuscular Diseases. The Centre has a particular focus on diseases of peripheral nerves and muscles.

The Centre runs a number of specialist clinics under the auspices of the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. Prof Hanna also runs national referral services for neurological channelopathies and mitochondrial diseases at the Centre.

Mitochondrial NCG Service

Together with colleagues in Newcastle and in Oxford, the London Queen Square mitochondrial group provide a nationally commissioned clinical and diagnostic service for patients with rare mitochondrial respiratory chain diseases in England.

The Queen Square group provide a comprehensive clinical and diagnostic service. The clinical service includes regular multidisciplinary outpatient clinics for adults and for children with associated in-patient facilities. The NCG Service includes established fully accredited laboratories located at Queen Square which provide diagnostic services in muscle histopathology, molecular genetic diagnostics and respiratory chain biochemistry.

Patients may be referred into the service for full diagnostic and clinical evaluation. Alternatively blood, DNA, muscle or other tissue samples may be referred into the service for appropriate diagnostic evaluations of which the following form needs to be filled in and returned to the service.

The clinics are located in the centre of Neuromuscular disease with outpatient facilities available in the National Hospital of Neurology and Neurosurgery and in Great Ormond Street Hospital.
