Ipswich Museums Service holds a collection of several hundred ancient Egyptian artefacts. The collection contains many objects excavated by Petrie or the British School of Archaeology in Egypt, including material from Lahun, Harageh, Riqqeh, Gurob, Sedment, Hawara, Abydos, Badari and the Fayum. Also within the collection are a small number of objects excavated at Beni Hasan by the University of Liverpool. A substantial part of the collection is made up of donations from private individuals.

At present, a large proportion of the ancient Egyptian collection can be searched on-line, although a small number of objects, mostly flints, have not yet been included. Photographs are currently available to view on-line for most of the objects.

Notable people associated with the collection:

Schwartz, to Ipswich Museum. Both men had an avid interest in archaeology. In addition, A.S. Barnes was a noted engineer, who was Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Manchester and published widely in his field.

Heyward Walter Seton Karr (1859-1938). A well-known collector of flints from Egypt. He also donated flints to other COVES member collections including Brighton Museum and Bexhill Museum.

E.H. Fison. Local businessman who donated a collection of Egyptian objects to the museum in 1900.
