Buckinghamshire County Museum

Museum exteriorAbout the Museum

The museum has collections of over 130,000 objects, representing the recent history, archaeology, art, costume and natural history of the county. Collections also include 13,000 topographical photographs of the county, and 3000 pieces of art.

There are also small collections of ethnographic material and foreign antiquities, including the Egyptian collection. This material was largely acquired in the early 20th century, and although we still maintain and curate it, it is no longer being added to.

Museum gallery

The museum re-opened in 1995 after extensive refurbishment, and won the Museum of the year award in 1996. The beautifully restored buildings, some dating from the 15th century, now showcase the County's rich heritage alongside a changing programme of exhibitions in the Buckinghamshire Art Gallery and the interactive fun of the Roald Dahl Children's Gallery.

Whilst the Egyptian material is not normally on display, it is accessible at the museum stores by appointment. Following the work done on the Egyptian collection as part of the Virtual Egyptologist project it is planned to display some of the material for the first time in an exhibition in late summer/early autumn 2004.
