Research Interests

  • Optical imaging through turbulent and dense random media.
  • Time-of-flight measurement and imaging applications.
  • Development and application of Optical Tomography and Topography.
  • Medical and astronomical imaging methods and systems.

Current research activity involves the development of optical instruments for diffuse optical imaging of human subjects, with particular emphasis on the study of the premature infant brain at risk of damage resulting from hypoxia-ischaemia. My group has developed time-resolved instruments for three-dimensional optical tomography, utilising unique source and detector technology. These have been used to produce the first whole-brain images of evoked functional activity in the newborn infant, and this work is now focussed on the study of infant seizures. In addition, we have built systems for mapping the haemodynamic response in the cortex to sensory stimulation and other cognitive activity, and to acquire EEG measurements simultaneously. The time-resolved instrument is also being evaluated as a potential means of identifying and specifying breast disease.
