Outreach
Public Engager of the Year
Prof Clare Elwell was awarded the "Public Engager of the Year" prize.
Bright Club
Emily Cook and Jenny Griffiths have both braved UCL's Bright Club!
Rocket Day
On 10th July 2010, members of the Department ran a rocket-building workshop at Church Hill Nursery for parents and children. The children were able to build and launch different types of rocket, and we demonstrated some powered rockets. This work was funded by the Institute of Physics.
Open Days
We run a number of different open days, aimed at informing prospective students about UCL, our Department and Medical Physics in particular.
Near infrared spectroscopy on the BBC
In April 2009, Prof Clare Elwell took part in a BBC Horizon programme called Alan and
Marcus go forth and multiply, where she used near infrared
spectroscopy to see how a mathematician (Marcus de Sautoy) and a
non-mathematician (Alan Davies) process maths problems.
Podcasts
Prof Roger Ordidge has been interviewed on his seminal contributions to the
development of MRI. His interview is available on youtube.
Medical Physics education
We have produced a set of teaching materials which can be used to teach medical physics to GCSE level in schools. Every school in the UK were sent a pack containing three Powerpoint lessons, a workbook and other material. It is also free to download.
We have also developed web-based teaching materials aimed at helping teachers to teach medical imaging to GCSE level. Both sets of teaching materials were mainly funded by EPSRC.
Royal Society Summer Exhibition and Science Museum
In Summer 2006, the Biomedical Optics Research Laboratory had a major exhibition called "Shedding Light on the Human Body" at the Royal Society's summer science exhibition. Here's a factsheet. We have also had an exhibition at the Science Museum, and at Showcase Science, a conference for sixth-form students. We have had other presentations and exhibits at the BA Festival of Science, Parliament, and other events.
