The impacts of UCL Life Sciences research on the wider world have been recognised in the Research Excellence Framework 2021.

UCL has come second within the UK for research power in the Research Excellence Framework 2021 (REF), with 93% of our research being classed as ‘world leading’ and ‘internationally excellent’.

We’re proud to have maintained our position as top in the UK for research power in ‘medicine, health and life sciences’, demonstrating the impact our research has worldwide. Below are just some examples of how our research is transforming the world.


Case Study: Understanding disease spill-over from wildlife to improve public health

A transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a number of Lassa virus virions adjacent to some cell debris. The virus, a member of the virus family en:Arenaviridae, causes en:Lassa fever.
UCL and Institute of Zoology researchers have identified what drives transfer of diseases from wildlife to people, predicting emerging disease hotspots and informing disease management globally.
