Biography

  1. Son of Samuel Gibbes and grandson of Sir Philip Gibbes 1st bart (a Barbados baronetcy) and Agnes Osborne. Born and grew up in England, resided Barbados 1821-1833, left for England at the time of the Abolition Act, emigrated to Australia 1850 and then to New Zealand 1855.

  2. The aunt of Sir Samuel Osborne Gibbes, Elizabeth Gibbes (1760/1-1847), the daughter of Sir Philip Gibbes, 1st bart of Spring Head Barbados, and Agnes Osborne, had married in 1796 Charles Abbot, later Baron Colchester (1757-1829), Speaker of the House of Commons 1802-1817.
