Biography

One of the illegitimate children of Ann Whyte, "a free Sambo woman". With his mother and siblings, James owned enslaved people in St Thomas-in-the-East, although Robert Edmiston senior Esquire (presumably the children's father) held the life interest. Born 29/04/1812 and baptised at Windhill, St Thomas-in-the-East, 02/02/1813 with three of his siblings, "all children of colour".

There was another James Edmiston who was overseer in St Thomas-in-the-East from at least 1801-1807.
