Biography

Grandfather of James Adam Gordon (q.v.), father of James Gordon (1758-1822) (q.v.) and Mary Anne Brebner Gordon (q.v.), who married Sir William Abdy the 6th bart. (q.v.). James Brebner took the name Gordon on inheriting from his uncle James Gordon of Antigua (q.v.). 

  1. The will of Stephen Lavington proved 08/12/1759 recites an indenture between himself and his sister Ann and brother-in-law James Brebner of Antigua then of Argyle Street of 1755. The text of the indenture shows Lavington conveying his property on Antigua (3 freehold estates and 2 leasehold estates) to James Brebner in exchange for Brebner taking on Lavington's debts up to £4000, paying Lavington £1300 and granting Lavington an annuity of £500 p.a. in addition to the annuity his wife already held of the same amount.
