Biography

Born 31/12/1776, eldest son of Robert Delap of Monellan and Mary Anne, only child of James Bogle of Monellan. Graduated from Trinity College, Dublin, 1797; admitted an attorney, Court of Exchequer in Ireland, 1797; became Registrar in the Court of his brother-in-law Richard Pennefather (1773-1859), Chief Baron of the Exchequer, in 1820 and continued as such until Pennefather's death. Married, 1810, Susan, daughter of John Bennett (died 1792), fourth Justice of the Court of King's Bench in Ireland; her sister Jane married Pennefather. Of Bray, Co.Wicklow, when a candidate to be High Sheriff of Co. Donegal, 1818 (Dublin Weekly Register, 28/11/1818). A Deputy-Lieutenant of that county by 1834 (Londonderry Sentinel, 10/05/1834), a Justice of the Peace by 1846 (Northern Whig, 19/01/1846), and a Governor of the County Infirmary by 1843 (Derry Journal, 19/12/1843).

The residence, sugar-works and slave-houses on his Orange estate were destroyed in the uprising of 1831. He built Monellan Castle, on land in Castlefin which had been his mother's inheritance, in the 1830s; the house is said (see Wikipedia entry for Killygordan) to have had 35 rooms. He died 07/06/1849 (Dublin Evening Post, 09/05/1849). His wife had died in 1825.
