13 July 2017

Our annual weekend retreat at

The event was a resounding success and a big thank you to all those helped organise the event. Special thanks in particular to the student organisers: Jo Blodgett, Alex Blokland, Aradhna Kaushal and Tyrone Curtis.

The theme of the weekend was "Moderation not deprivation: Components of a healthy life"

There were some fascinating talks and discussions throughout the weekend, including:

  • Dr Benjamin Gardiner, King's College London: Behaviour matters: Understanding and changing habitual health behaviour
  • Professor Josie Tetley, Manchester Metropolitan University: Sexuality, intimacy and later life: Findings from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing
  • Dr Ford Hickson, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine: Chemsex as edgework
  • Dr Helen Crawley, City University London/First Steps Nutrition Trust: Eating well: clean, dirty, superfoods and health claims. Are nutrition fads about promoting health or making money?
  • Professor Annie Britton, UCL: Consumption controversies: Alcohol policies in the UK
  • Dr Owen Gower of Cumberland Lodge led a lively discussion on higher education and social responsibility, while a session on building personal resilience was provided by Karen Smith, UCL's Wellbeing Consultant.

Less-academic activities of the weekend included yoga, croquet and an EPIc games night, which included the epi-themed board game Pandemic and a challenging but very popular adaptation of Pictionary using epidemiology-related terms (lots more fun than it sounds!).
