Experimental replication of ancient Egyptian glass

P.T. Nicholson and C.M. Jackson

This paper describes the replication of a furnace unearthed at Tell el-Amarna, Egypt and dated to the reign of Akhenaten (c.1350 B.C.). Experimental replication shows that the furnace is probably for the making of glass and that ancient Egyptian glass could be made in a single stage using locally available raw materials.
