Karen Stepanyan

Karen Stepanyan UCL 2016

I joined the Department of Information Studies at University College London (UCL), to teach Information Systems and Web Technologies modules. I hold a PhD from Brunel University and an MSc in Computer and Information Science from the American University of Armenia. I have also completed a Postgraduate Certificate Course in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education at Buckinghamshire New University and have been a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy from 2009.

Prior to joining UCL I worked as the Head of eLearning and a Course Leader at the London School of Business and Management. I also worked as a Research Fellow/Associate at the Department of Computer Science at the University of Warwick and the Knowledge Media Institute at the Open University.

My research interests revolve around the inter-relation of information technologies and the concepts of knowledge. I contributed to the field of Web Science using primary sources of Web data such as Twitter, the Blogosphere, and other Linked Open Data cloud. My primary research interests focus on the advancement of the Semantic Web technologies and understanding of the Social fabric behind the Web. I am also interested in learning theories and application of information technologies for teaching and learning. More generally, I continuously explore the potential benefits of various scientific paradigms and examine methodologies that can improve our research practice.
