Steve Morris, Professor of Health Economics. Steve Morris is also the joint national organiser of the Health Economists' Study Group (HESG).

The Department

  • is driven by the need to tackle the social gradient in health and to improve health and health care across all social groups;
  • focuses on those interventions, programmes and pathways which are most likely to have a substantial impact in terms of health outcomes and reductions in health and health care inequalities;
  • has interests that span health care and public health services and measures to influence policy, clinical decisions and health related behaviour;
  • is concerned with evaluating the quality (effectiveness, cost effectiveness, equity and appropriateness) of health care and public health interventions; and
  • focuses on developing the knowledge base about the adoption, implementation and dissemination of evidence based health care and public health interventions.

The Department is divided into five multidisciplinary research groups, comprising clinical and non-clinical academics who have quantitative and/or qualitative expertise. The Groups build upon the membership of the UCL Health Care Evaluation Group, established by Professor Raine in 2005 and comprise:

The Inequalities Research Group

led by Dr Mizanur Khondoker. This group addresses the paradox of overall improvements in life expectancy in the face of persistent health inequalities. It measures the relative contributions of health care and public health interventions on outcomes.

The Evaluation Group

led by Dr Nora Pashayan. This group examines how individual, organisational and contextual factors affect health care/public health use, access and outcomes.

The Health Economics Group

led by Professor Steve Morris. This group evaluates the cost and cost effectiveness of health care interventions and public health programmes, and investigates resource allocation in health care and public health.

The Surgical Outcomes Resource Centre (SOuRCe)

led by Dr Ramani Moonsinghe. This group focuses on risk adjustment and outcomes analysis for the surgical specialities.

The Health Care Organisation and Management Group

led by Professor Naomi Fulop. This group evaluates re-organisations and service improvements across the NHS. Naomi Fulop is the current chair of the Health Services Research Network (HSRN).
