Shopping

As China opens up more and more to tourism and takes steps towards a market economy, an exciting mix of traditional and modern style goods has become evident in the department stores and shops in the major centres. Shanghai has led the way and offers imported as well as local products at competitive prices.

The currency is the ‘yuan’ (pronounced ‘yu-en’) and the exchange rate (August 2005) is around £1 = 14.09 yuan. Note: the Chinese currency is also referred to as ‘renmenbi’, but ‘yuan’ is the more commonly used name.

Photo of boy in western-style outfitA budding model in his distinctly western-style outfit. Perhaps one day he will strut the catwalks in Shanghai, Paris, Milan, London and New York…
