Tier 1 – about the library

How do I book a Study room and other study spaces available in UCL?

Go to Explore Catalogue at book the Study room

Find the study room you want to book, sign in, pick the date and time.

Where are the Quartos books located?

All Quartos books are located at the front of the Library, opposite the Issue Desk.

What are the Library`s opening hours?

The IOA Library is open from Monday to Friday 09:30 – 21:00 and Saturday 11:00 – 18:00.

We are closed on Sunday. Other libraries are open 24-hours:

Main Library

  • Monday: Open from 08:45
  • Tuesday - Friday: 24 hour opening
  • Saturday: 24 hour opening until 21:00
  • Sunday: 11:00 - 21:00 (holders of UCL Library cards only)

Science Library

  • Monday: Open from 08:45
  • Tuesday - Friday: 24 hour opening
  • Saturday: 24 hour opening until 21:00
  • Sunday: 11:00 - 21:00 (holders of UCL Library cards only)

SSEES Library

  • Monday: Open from 09:00
  • Tuesday - Friday: 24 hour opening
  • Saturday: 24 hour opening until 17:00
  • Sunday: 10:00-17:00

Cruciform Library

  • Monday - Saturday: Opens 09:00 Monday then 24 hours until 21:00 Saturday
  • Sunday: 11:00 - 21:00 (holders of UCL Library Cards only)

Can I enter the Library without my UCL ID Card?

No. It is university and library security regulation that you should have your ID card

with you at all times.

No card no entry to the IOA or any other UCL library.

Why is only bottled water allowed in the IOA Library?

The IOA Library has many rare and expensive materials (books and journals),

particularly in our Egyptology collections, which once damaged cannot be replaced.

What is the idea behind our Plants in the Library?

To create an attractive, welcoming and green environment. You can study in a jungle.

How do I pay my Library fines?

Library fines can be paid at the Issue Desk (cash or card) or by calling an individual Library with your bank card details. You cannot pay library fines online at the present time.

What is my PIN number?

Default PIN number is your date of birth - 4-digit number – dd-mm- this can be

changed if needed at the Issue Desk or through the ‘My Account’ option on-line.

How do I renew my Library books?

Library books can be renewed at the Issue Desk, on-line using Explore, by calling the

Issue Desk, or by the using self-check out kiosk.

Library Terminology: quartos; cataloguing, processing, stores, reshelving?

Quartos - books larger than 28 cm in height

On order – we are waiting for this to be supplied from the bookseller

Cataloguing – is the process of creating data representing information resources,

such as books, journals, images, etc.

Processing – is the next step after a book being catalogued, to be placed on

the shelf.

Hold – the book is waiting behind the desk to be picked up by a library user

Stores – the UCL Library off-site store in Essex. This is a closed collection which 

houses historical research material not currently in high demand.

Reshelving – books are being placed back to shelves.

How do I connect to Eduroam or Guest Wi-Fi?

Follow this link Eduroam to connect to Eduroam .

Guest Wi-Fi it’s only available for external visitors. Visitors must be a member of the

Library before having access to Guest Wi-Fi.

How I can top up my printing credits?

Follow this link safecom and log in, or alternatively credits can be topped up in some

Libraries such as IOA 5th floor or Science library on the ground floor by using cash

loaders.

How do I change my UCL password?

Where are the toilets?

Male toilets are located on uneven floors - Basement; 3rd; 5th

Female toilets are located on even floors- Basement; 1st, 2nd; 4th; 6th

Where can I find computer clusters in the building?

1st floor and 5th floor – More can be found here - Teaching spaces locations
