23rd June 2005: New Literacy Project

We are please to announce that the AHRC has awarded a 3-year grant to support research into Literacy in Etruria and central Italy, also based at the Institute of Archaeology, UCL, and conducted by the same research team as Developmental Literacy in Early Italy


23rd March 2005:  Publication of Literacy Project

A two-volume publication derived from Developmental Literacy in Early Italy (provisionally titled Literacy in Pre-Roman Italy: New Approaches), will be published by the Institute of Classical Studies as a supplement to the Bulletin of the Institute of Classical Studies, hopefully in 2006.


18th February 2004:  AUT action and the literacy seminars

Because the seminar series is a research activity rather than part of our core teaching and administrative duties,  John Bennet's seminar on February 24th will be going ahead as planned.


15th November 2003: Project presentation

A presentation and progress report on the Developmental Literacy Project was made at the Autumn meeting of the British Epigraphy Society, which took place on November 15th in the Department of History, UCL.


28th October 2003:  Literacy Seminars - Change to Programme confirmed

The title of Philip Milne-Smith's seminar on November 25th will be:

"Lapidarias litteras scio". Literacy and inscribing communities in Roman Venetia.


28th October 2003:  Literacy Seminars - Change to Seminar Programme

Alex Whitehead has been forced to cancel his seminar on November 25th due to unavoidable circumstances.  Instead, Dr Philip Milne-Smith will present a paper on literacy and epigraphy in Roman North East Italy.  Details of title to follow.
