UCL and Science Museum unveil virtual shipping galleries

2 August 2013

A project involving UCL's Photogrammetry, 3D Imaging and Metrology group and the UCL Centre for Digital Humanities, has seen the unveiling of a unique 3D point cloud model of the Science Museum’s shipping galleries, created from 2 billion precise measurements.

In a first for the UK museums sector, this activity is part of the work of UCL PhD student, John Hindmarch (jointly supervised by Dr Melissa Terras and and Professor Stuart Robson). His work focuses on the use and usability of 3D scanning within the museum and heritage sector. The project has already garnered a great deal of interest from the media, including the Huffington Post, Design Week, Culture 24 and Digital Arts Online.
