Sports Day 2005

This year's Sports day was on Tuesday the 7th of June 2005 at Shenley Sports ground, and was a great success, thank you to all that participated! The cricket match was won by the Staff, see below for a full report (or here for a pdf version).

Staff Student Cricket Match 2005
Staff Reclaim Supremecy After Two Years of Suffering

Students will forever insist it was just a bit of fun, but it was nothing of the sort. They were comprehensively beaten by an elegant and efficient staff team, and a sharp improvement in form and attitude will be necessary if they are to turn the result around next year.

With the start of the match delayed as a result of last minute student tinkering with team selection, the sense of occasion was tangible. As is traditional, staff batsmen took to the pitch first. Much to their surprise, they found that the inept bunch who failed to take a single wicket last year had transformed into a decent set of bowlers, this time managing to take seven wickets. Whilst fans were treated to an excellent display of fast bowling from the likes of Jha and Bisson, the rest of the bowlers were certainly guilty of inconsistency: A staggering 42 extras were given away in total. Overall the staff put in a very good batting performance, although the prolific Baker and Fitzmaurice are entitled to wonder what may have been had they been allowed to carry on playing past the 40 run cap established before the match. The innings closed with the staff scoring a respectable 200 runs, which for the students was nevertheless an improvement over last year's 220.

The students came out for the second innings with all guns blazing, scoring 82 runs in the first six overs alone. This was mostly due to Scott and the ever impressive Bisson, who retired after scoring 42 runs. Unfortunately, things started to go wrong for the students following the unexpected early exits of Jha and Sadiq, both of whom had looked set for some high scoring displays. With the exception of Fowler, who was in any case constrained to piecemeal runs as a result of some tightly organised fielding, the remaining batsmen all succumbed to the devastatingly consistent staff bowling. Branford, in particular, must be singled out for his hat-trick of wickets. With three overs left, the only man left standing for the students was Bisson, who duly took his place at the crease. With student hopes resting entirely on his shoulders, the pressure was on. After scoring five runs with the first two balls, for a brief period it looked as if Bisson could lead his team to an unlikely victory. However, veteran spin bowler Anderson had other ideas: He unleashed an insideous ball straight through the stumps, and condemned the students to a humiliating defeat.
