ChemPhysSoc 2006 World Cup Predictor

Points System

Points are awarded for the correct match result, team scores and match score.

The "base" value awarded for a MATCH RESULT is 5 points.
The "base" value awarded for a correct team (HOME or AWAY) is 5 points.
The "base" value awarded for a MATCH SCORE is 20 points.

So for example a 2-1 win correctly predicted would, without the application of tariffs, score:
5(MATCH RESULT) + 5(HOME SCORE) + 5 (AWAY SCORE) + 20 points (MATCH SCORE)=35 points.

A bonus of 20 extra points is awarded for games where the correct MATCH SCORE involves 4 or more goals scored.

Tariffs, based on the difference of FIFA World Rankings of the team (as of April 10th) involved, are applied to give greater accuracy to points distribution:

0-9 places; 0.0 tariff.
10-19 places; 0.1 tariff.
20-29 places; 0.2 tariff.
30-39 places; 0.3 tariff.
40-49 places; 0.4 tariff.
50-59 places; 0.5 tariff.

The designation home/away teams are based on the stronger/weaker FIFA rankings on April 1st 2006.

The tariff affects the MATCH RESULT value. For instance:
Predict a Brazil win over Australia correctly, 3 (5 x (1-tariff)) points awarded for MATCH RESULT.
Predict an Australia win over Brazil correctly, 7 (5 x (1+tariff)) points awarded for MATCH RESULT.
The tariff for "0" predicted score for the away side is also amended.
e.g. Predict Australia score no goals against Brazil, 3 (5 x (1-tariff)) points awarded for AWAY SCORE.
For tariff=0, the draw result score of 5 is amended:
e.g. Holland draw with Argentina, 3 points awarded for MATCH RESULT.

Prizes

There are prizes awared on an individual and a team basis. Teams are designated by captains who have to produce a team name and list between five and eight people (who have already purchased their individual entry forms). This is sent to cps_worldcup@yahoo.co.uk.

Out of a given team (maximum of 8 players), the top 5 scores are averaged and the top score wins the team prize (tba).
The individual 1st prize jackpot will be at least £100, rising depending on the number of players.
Runners up, weekly and team prizes will be announced closer to the start of the World Cup.
