Estates and Accommodation

Here are some of the recent changes implemented by UCL as a result of student feedback

Students reported that maintenance issues, such as lifts breaking down, blocked toilets, or problems with heating and ventilation, are a pain point in some buildings

In response, Estates have developed the Infrastructure Masterplan (IMP), a long-term roadmap to ensure UCL campuses are safe, inclusive, sustainable, and fit for the future. Over the next two years, UCL will invest £48.5 million in a mix of essential upgrades and ongoing maintenance.

Students reported that security in halls could be improved

In response, UCL is enhancing security by adding more security guards and allocating £3 million for physical security upgrades.

Students reported that some spaces don’t have sufficient power access or have broken sockets

In response, the rolling teaching spaces refurbishment programme prioritises power outlets, for example by installing them in lecture theatre writing ledges.

Students requested more study space, particularly during exam season

In response, UCL is revamping and introducing touchdown spaces across campus, with more furniture appearing in previously unused areas over the next year.

Students told us they like calming, professional colours in teaching spaces, as well as biophilic design elements such as natural materials and colours inspired by nature. They also voted on their preferred seating options for classrooms

In response, furniture and décor selections for this year’s summer refresh of teaching spaces were based on this feedback.

Students value opportunities for social connection and a sense of community on campus

In response, UCL has made improving the campus experience for all users and putting students at the heart of campus one of the key principles of the Estates Strategy.

Students requested more lecture theatres and teaching spaces

In response, the refurbishment of 1–19 Torrington Place added three new lecture theatres with 120-person capacities, as well as seven new classrooms.

Students said that the process of applying for accommodation at UCL could be improved

In response, the UCL Accommodation Portal is now easier to find and includes “How to” videos to guide future students through their applications.
