Help with Writing Skills at UCL

In addition to the Writing Lab, you might like to know about some of the other academic writing services available at UCL.

Writing Lab

The Writing Lab is a free service designed to enhance students' academic writing and research skills. Our workshops and tutorials are available for undergraduate and Masters students in the Joint Faculties of Arts and Humanities and Social and Historical Sciences, in the Bartlett Faculty of the Built Environment, and in Psychology & Language Sciences.

Academic Writing Centre, Institute of Education

The Academic Writing Centre provides support for IOE students in the form of short courses (face to face and online), one-to-one tutorials (face to face, Skype or phone), online discussion forums, and online resources.

NB These services are available to students at the Institute of Education.

UCL Centre for Languages and International Education (CLIE)

The UCL Centre for Languages & International Education offers a range of degree preparation courses for Undergraduate and Graduate international students, as well a diverse portfolio of UCL summer schools.

Over 17 foreign languages (including English) and teacher training courses are provided across a range of academic levels to support UCL degree students, UCL staff and London's wider academic and professional community.

NB These courses incur additional fees.

Writing and Language Support Programme (WALS), UCLU

The Writing and Language Support programme is run by UCLU for international students studying at UCL. The aim of the free WALS Peer Tutor scheme is to assist non-native English speaking students with their academic writing and speaking. We run several different types of activities to help you with your spoken English: a regular programme of lessons and workshops, bookable one-to-one sessions with our peer tutors, and 'Coffee and Conversation', a weekly opportunity to get together and practice your spoken English with other students.

NB This is only available for international students

Royal Literary Fund Fellows

The RLF Fellows are professional authors, and the principal aim of their work at UCL is to foster good writing practice across all disciplines and media, helping all students (undergraduate and graduate) to write clearly and effectively.
