  • Higher-level apprenticeships (Level 4) which can lead to an HNC, NVQ Level 4 and above, or a foundation degree.
What qualifications and skills can I get?

This varies according to the apprenticeship standard, but you may gain the following skills and qualifications:

  • Technical–specific knowledge, skills behaviours and competencies needed to do the role
  • Competency-based: to show you have the knowledge and skills to do the role, for example National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) or Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF).

The length of the apprenticeships we offer will depend on the programme type and the level of qualification you are working towards and your age, prior skills and experiences. This can range from 12 months to 5 years.

The duration of each apprenticeship is determined by the level and length of the programme, plus your prior skills and experiences.

You will be working full time – UCL’s standard working hours are 36.5 hours per week. You can expect the off-the-job training towards your qualification to take a minimum average of 6 hours per week and it will be considered part of your working hours.

What kind of support will I be given during the apprenticeship?
  • All our new apprentices receive a thorough induction plan with details of training and work plans.
  • Line managers and other members of the team are on hand to support with your day-to-day work and you'll have regular meetings to discuss your development needs and set goals.
  • Personal mentors and/or buddies (usually another or former apprentice) provide support.
  • You will also be assigned a development coach/tutor who will provide pastoral care, information and advice.
  • UCL’s Organisational Development team also provides extra support.
  • Join our rich community of early career apprentices, offering peer-to-peer support.
How is my progress monitored and assessed?

As an apprentice, you will have regular meetings with your manager, UCL Organisational Development and the training provider to check your progress, identify any support needed and make sure that you are on track to complete the apprenticeship.

  • Your performance will be reviewed against your objectives (individual and team level).
  • We will also track your progress through your completion of coursework, other assessments and exams.
What happens after the apprenticeship?

Your line manager will support you with looking at where you want to take your career and the steps you can take to get there.

If you successfully complete the programme, you'll have the opportunity to apply for roles at UCL, Your line manager will have a career conversation with you six months before the end of your apprenticeship.

An offer of a permanent post will only be valid on successfully achieving the apprenticeship.

Most of our apprentices have secured permanent employment or further apprenticeship training with us on completion of their apprenticeship.
