Our clinical work is based at University College London Hospitals, the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery and the Whittington hospital, and it encompasses urogynaecology incorporating mesh complications, chronic urinary tract infections, abdominal and pelvic pain, functional gastroenterology/Colo-rectal surgery, neuro-urogynaecology and neuromodulation.
Our sites of clinical work are as outlined below.
University College London Hospitals
UCLH houses two important departments working in the field of female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery:
- London Complex Mesh Centre
- Urogynaecology Unit
London Complex Mesh Centre (LCMC)
The London Complex Mesh Centre is based in the Womens Health Directorate and is an NHS England Commissioned Centre of excellence for managing continence and prolapse mesh complications. It is a multi-disciplinary collaboration between the Directorates of Womens Health (based at UCLH), Surgery (based at West Moreland Street and UCLH) and Clinical Neurosciences (based at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery) incorporating the specialities of urogynaecology, urology, colo-rectal surgery, imaging, pain medicine, clinical psychology, physiotherapy and nursing.
The LCMC serves the communities of London and the South-East, and also accepts patients who choose to come to the centre from other parts of the UK. The leads for the clinical service and the research areas covering that aspect of the service are:
- Sohier Elneil in the Clinical Lead (Urogynaecology)
- Tamsin Greenwell is the Deputy Clinical Lead (Urology)
- Andrew Baranowski is the Lead for Pain Services
- Austin Obichere is the Lead for Colo-rectal surgery

Urogynaecology
Urogynaecology at UCLH is based at the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Wing (EGA), which is based within the UCLH complex. The unit is run by four Urogynaecologists who work together to offer joint clinics and theatre lists with the benefits of their differing areas of specialist capability. They offer wide-spread expertise in female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery.
This is also the training hub for the RCOG/HEE Training Programme in Urogynaecology:
- Sohier Elneil is the Training Programme Director
- Rajvinder Khasriya is the Deputy Training Programme Director
Urogynaecology at The Whittington Hospital
Urogynaecology at the Whittington Hospital is based on Magdala Avenue. The unit is run by two Urogynaecologists. The service is well known for its multi-disciplinary Urogynaecology service, and its Chronic Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (LUTS) service.
Neuro-urogynaecology and Pain Medicine at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery
This service is based in the Department of Uro-neurology at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, and the Pain Management Centre on Cleveland Street. There are five Consultants in the Uro-neurology department who come from multiple disciplines – urogynaecology, neurology, urology and gastro-enterology. They cover a diverse group of patients with neurological and non-neurological pelvic floor dysfunction.
Functional Gastroenterology/Colorectal Surgery at UCLH
This is a well-established department at UCLH and covers neuromodulation and neuro-gastroenterology research in women with complex bowel dysfunction. This includes postpartum anal sphincter trauma and dysfunction.
